Your Water Type Could Be Ruining Your Glass Shower Door

Depending on where you live, you may experience some nasty problems with your water. Parts of the Midwest and South tend to experience hard water problems in their systems. Hard water is caused by large amounts of dissolved minerals in the water. These minerals include calcium, magnesium and lime. The water doesn't start out hard and softens when it rains, meaning it contains less than 1 GPG (per gallon of grain), but as this water moves through the ground it absorbs the dissolved minerals, making it very hard (containing more than 10.5 GPG).

Hard water can be difficult to manage, and water softeners can cause other problems with the water. The main problem with hard water is the film it leaves on the shower door, and the longer you let the problem go, the more troublesome it becomes. With soft water, you will have a different problem. Soft water has a high sodium content because it cannot be removed with a water softener. It may be better for your shower, but it will make your water taste salty, potentially unhealthy to drink, and it can get dirty!

Removing stains from glass shower doors

When trying to remove hard or soft water stains, traditional soap and water can be more damaging than beneficial to stained shower doors near me. Instead, try using a commercial lime or calcium remover spray designed to remove these types of stains!

For fresh hard water spots, try wiping the shower with a drying pad. The drying pad removes calcium buildup without scratching the surface of the glass door, helping it stay clean and removing these nasty stains.

For particularly stubborn hard water stains, spray lemon juice on the door and then wipe the door with a vinegar and baking soda solution using a soft cloth or sponge. Immediately after completing this process, rinse and dry, and you should be able to see it through the glass as if it were brand new!

To prevent these stains, remember to wipe and dry the shower door after each use. Also, consider purchasing a protective coating to reduce these stains! For areas with very hard water, a water softener is also a great preventative measure!
