Why Choose Sliding Shower Doors?
There are several reasons to choose a sliding shower door, especially when compared to a traditional hinged shower door or shower curtain. Some of the reasons are obvious: shower curtains can make a bathroom look outdated and dirty after a few years. On the other hand, hinged shower doors are not practical in terms of cleaning. That should be enough to convince you to choose a sliding glass door - but wait! There are some more innovative reasons, some of which may surprise you.
Easy to clean
Compared to curtains or hinged doors, sliding shower doors are very easy to clean. For starters, you don't need to remove the fabric from a series of individual shower rings, just painstakingly re-ring the curtain after a few hours of washing and drying cycles. Since the curtains do need to be cleaned, either on site or in the washing machine, at least once a month, this will save you a lot of time cleaning your shower.
Did you know that shower curtains actually need to be discarded and replaced every six months? Installing sliding glass doors will also save you from having to reorder curtains for your bathroom (or bathrooms) twice a year. Second, you don't have to worry about getting into hard-to-reach areas of the hinge hardware that attract soap scum when it comes in contact with water and bath products. Sliding shower door hardware is often installed in areas where accidental water and product spills are easier to take care of. There are also fewer nooks and crannies than hinge hardware, which means soap scum won't find its home in areas you can't reach.
Save space
Sliding shower doors are perfect for smaller areas or bathrooms where shower placement is less than ideal. Installing a hinged glass shower door for your shower stall or shower and tub combination will only take up more valuable space than you may be willing (or able) to sacrifice.
While some homeowners try to solve this problem by installing a pivoting shower door that opens in either direction, not many people have the shower space to allow a pivoting door to open inward. Often, you will find that neither you nor the door has room. Sliding doors, on the other hand, only require space to slide to the left or right, either in front of another door panel or in front of a wall space.
Durability
Yes, sliding glass door panels are made of glass, but that doesn't mean they are easily broken or damaged. Sliding glass shower doors are extremely long-lasting, and when these doors are framed rather than frameless, they do a better job of preventing cracking and breakage.
Ease of use
At first glance, this may seem counterintuitive - shouldn't a shower curtain or hinged door be easy enough to use already? Well, it's actually not for everyone. Traditional hinged doors with door handles or knobs can actually be difficult for older homeowners (such as those with arthritis) to operate, and shower curtains are similarly more difficult to grab and pull to one side. In addition, shower curtains lack stability. Sliding glass shower doors, however, are much easier to push to one side and do not require the same fine-motor skills involved as curtains or doorknobs. They are also very stable, and additional rods can be installed to get the support needed.
Modern Design
Let's face it: While shower curtains are sold in thousands of patterns, textures and colors, you really won't find anything that complements a truly modern design.
Glass doors are the way to go when trying to achieve this design approach, and obviously sleek sliding door hardware (as opposed to hinged hardware) is the ultimate touch of modern chic. The stainless steel track looks both simple and modern, and complements the rest of your modern bathroom decor.
